<image:caption>After a short amble across the slightly boggy ground once off the main track here is Summer Lodge Tarn! It sits on top of the moor with great views all round. It about 200 meters in length and width - very ballpark estimations! It’s a bit boggy and wet at some of the edges, but not all the way around and you will find somewhere dry to sit for a wee break.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - What is on in Swaledale in June? - Watch the lambs in the fields</image:title>
<image:caption>While lambing season can start as early as November in some parts of the country it is usually a bit later than that in Swaledale and North Yorkshire. Lambs start appearing in March and can continue for a few weeks into May. So have a look in the fields as the lambs are typically out with their Yow mother and they are just great to listen to and watch them as they gambol about full of the joys of spring. If that sounds a little poetic just watch them. They really do gambol! Please do keep your dogs under control and ideally on a lead anywhere near the sheep at this time of year as they can easily abort if stressed. As you can see from this photo taken a few years ago I was a fair distance away to gibe the Yow and lamb their own space and not feel threatened.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - What is on in Swaledale in June? - Swale Trail Bike Ride or Walk</image:title>
<image:caption>At Swale View we are well positioned to get easy access to the Swale Trail at roughly the mid way point, the trail which notionally runs from Reeth to Keld and can be used by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and sometimes by motorbikes, but not that often. It is a very family friendly with generally easy climbs, good condition tracks and roads, but there are occasional places particularly when it is wet that can be challenging. The photo alongside this shows the section of the trail between Crackpot and Gunnerside and is indicative of the surface you will find. Can’t always promise the very quacky ducks and ducklings we had on this day! A very good guide is available here from the YDNP.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - What is on in Swaledale in June? - Waterfalls Walks</image:title>
<image:caption>There are of course many famous waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales such as Aysgarth Falls, Hardraw Force, Aysgill Force, Kidson Force and Janets Foss. But locally to Swale View and ‘easy’ reach with a bike ride or a very short car journey there are a few worth looking at. There is a nice walk from Muker that takes in the four waterfalls in and around Keld of Catrake Force, East Gill Force, Kidson Force and Wain Wath Force. While all are relatively easy to find on the map access can be a bit tricky so read the information in the links above! You will be fine but just take care! Link to map here. <image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Things to do in May in Swaledale - Waterfalls Walks</image:title>
<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Swaledale Bridges - Yorkshire Dales Finest Bridges - Surrender Bridge</image:title>
<image:caption>I have been across Surrender Bridge so many times both walking and driving. And of course under it as well! Going over the relatively quiet and interestingly named Mill Gill Old Gang Beck there are some good walks to be taken from here including the Surrender Bridge Circular. Why is it called Surrender Bridge? Well a couple of theories abound one that there was once a Surrender Mine there or that mine workers carrying wares had to surrender a toll before crossing. Either of these sound plausible. <image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Swaledale Bridges - Yorkshire Dales Finest Bridges - Ivelet Bridge - Gunnerside</image:title>
<image:caption>Probably one of the most iconic of the Swaledale Bridges Ivelet bridge is a lovely single span, single carriageway Grade 2 listed bridge dating from the 16th century and has the very interesting ‘coffin’ stone set on the North side of the bridge for pallbearers to rest the coffin on. as they made their way from Muker to Grinton. That’s a fair old hike even without a coffin! The bridge crosses the River Swale near the hamlet of Ivelet. Its a nice walk/drive from Gunnerside to the bridge and in fact there is another wee bridge you cross as well. The bad news is the bridge is haunted by the headless black dog. Supposedly it runs silently across the bridge and into the Swale and is a portent of death. So that’s nice. <image:caption>Located about 5 minutes walk from Swale View Isles bridge is a beauty! Crossing over the River Swale you can take a walk along the western side to Gunnerside or go East towards Reeth or pop over it to join the Swale Trail about 500 meters along the road.. The river rises really fast and often immediately after rainfall the stepping stones you see in the photo are covered so access to the Gunnerside walk means you need to navigate via the upper road. <image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Swaledale Bridges - Yorkshire Dales Finest Bridges - Reeth Suspension Bridge - Reeth</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally built in the 1920’s it was rebuilt in 2002 after being washed away; the Reeth suspension bridge is a pedestrian, and dog, bridge crossing the River Swale just outside of Reeth. It can be accessed also via a walk from Grinton on the South side and also connects with the Swale Trail that was as well. Can be a bit bouncy if you get your timing right and my dog occasionally speeds up as it makes her a tad unsure as to what is going on. Currently, March 2022, a diversion is in place on the North side due to erosion on the way to Reeth so you now get diverted back towards Healaugh for about 200 meters before you head back towards Reeth. <image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Swaledale Bridges - Yorkshire Dales Finest Bridges - Reeth Bridge - Reeth</image:title>
<image:caption>For me Reeth bridge always tells me I am only a couple of miles and a few minutes away from being back at Swale View. And as Reeth was the first place I stayed in visiting the Yorkshire Dales its always a happy reminder of that first time I stayed in Reeth. As you can see there is a nice wee spot for the dog to get in the river and there is a bench and table to sit at as well to rest up or have a picnic. Built in the 18th Century it is a Grade 2 listed structure and has 3 segmental arches separated by cutwaters forming passing places on the road - never knew what they were called so that’s interesting! <image:caption>Not sure if that is an official name as it’s a wee bridge I happened across while doing a walk one day from Fremington, beyond Reeth towards Langthwaite below Fremington Edge and back again. It’s a cracking wee timber slatted bridge and a really nice spot to stop and have a drink and bite to eat and for the dogs to have a dip. Really is one of my favourites on a sunny day. <image:caption>The musician in me (it’s a small part) likes the fact that Wharfedale (speakers!) and Coverdale (David) are next to each other - think Whitesnake from the 80’s! Got to say I dont know a huge amount about the Lune Valley area as it is right on the periphery of the YDNP so will need to get over there for a look see. Swaledale bangs in at number three and I am confident with some excessive instagramming I will get them into position #2 this time next week. Off the chart is a favourite area, Arkengarthdale ranked at #11, but it’s pretty small and not massively populated but its a smashing area so I would recommend going and have a look, and take some photos!</image:caption>

Gaping Gill is on my list of waterfalls to see as is Hull Pot. I keep meaning to get to them but somehow get distracted by the dog pulling me in various directions. Let’s be honest, when it has been raining they are much better so if you can time your visit post a heavy rain burst its well worth doing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just thinking about this there are multiple ‘three peaks’ walks so I really should remove them. But life’s too short and it’s only a fun list. So #1 should be Malham Cove, but it’s good to see Whernside getting plenty of action. Never been to the White Scar Caves although I have driven past them often. Need to take a time out to pop in at some stage soon. Semer water is great, lovely walk around the edge, nice wee preserved church ruins and if it’s a hot day pop in for a swim!</image:caption>

From Castles, to Abbeys, Entertainment venues, amazing structural engineering achievements and of course the wonderful Black Sheep Brewery. Mmmmm, beer. Fair to say Bolton Abbey is photogenic but so is Bolton Castle but not garenering nearly as many hashtags as the Abbeys. A challenge to you fair Castles - get more photos taken!</image:caption>

But next time I am over that way I am definitely going in and bagging up a load of cheese. They also have a wine shop which is worth a look as well. One of my mates is really into his Signal Boxes so he will be gutted to see it only has one engagement. I feel I have not done this category justice, I will revisit this category later this year and check out some more museums and attractions and see how they are doing. I missed out the ‘Ard Rock event! What an idiot - next time!</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - Top Ten Lists of Instagram for the Yorkshire Dales National Park - The Country Fairs Top Ten List</image:title>
<image:caption>Hotly contested it’s all up for grabs and I feel a concerted effort could lift the Reeth Show and Wensleydale Show into the top three. I was surprised at the relatively small numbers in this category. No other insight than that! When I was growing up we would always take photo’s and cine film of the events, to be looked at on a big screen at home when there was not a lot else to do!</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - My first year in Swaledale at Swale View Cottage - Swale View in the background</image:title>
<image:caption>Oct the 2nd 2018, I didn’t know it when I took this shot but I had a viewing later that morning that Low Row and Swale View were in the background. I took a drive over to Hawes and was just pottering around enjoying the views and decided to stop to take a couple of photos, it was a lovely day as you can see. So if you zoom in super closely you will see Sale View, I think, poking its head out among the trees. Little did I know that I would soon be viewing and bidding on the house a couple of miles away across the valley.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - My first year in Swaledale at Swale View Cottage - I own Swale View!</image:title>
<image:caption>March the 8th, a bit chilly, it snowed the day after, I drove up from London and only found out about an hour away the owners sale (I actually viewed the house they bought but my car got stuck halfway up the drive) had only just gone through but fortunately they had moved most things out already. I was staying in Fremington over the weekend to allow me time to move a few things in.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - My first year in Swaledale at Swale View Cottage - Rooms when I took over the house</image:title>
<image:caption>The house generally was in good order but you always want to make a few changes so the first thing I did was paint all of the internal rooms (wee bedroom not done yet, will be early in 2o2o!) in order to lighten up the feel of the house. I also added in some new lights, more to come particularly in the living room and kitchen, new smoke alarms wired in and carbon monoxide detectors installed. I may also change the flooring in the kitchen, hall and living room at some stage but they are good just now. Again, more of a personal taste thing than anything else.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Events in Swaledale - My first year in Swaledale at Swale View Cottage - Painting under way</image:title>
<image:caption>As always I was supervised by Skye the dog as I painted all of the rooms, fascinating stuff I am sure but actually rewarding for me and the dog seemed happy with the results! The paint is washable, allegedly, so any errant muddy tail swipes will be able to wiped off.</image:caption>

So when you are travelling here remember while it it is great to get out and walk there are some nice roads to discover some smashing places close by and further afield.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - living room</image:title>
<image:caption>The living room is well equipped with the focal area the large inglenook fireplace containing a multi fuel burner. As well as a large leather sofa with room for three people there is a large chair/sofa, enough for two if you squeeze in together and an additional leather chair if needed. Satellite TV & Amazon Prime on a 43 inch screen provides entertainment and there are games should you need some additional activities. An additional wall heater provides background heating to the main radiators but we would recommend getting the fire going if you need warming up! We supply coal, firelighters and some wood to start you off.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - kitchen</image:title>
<image:caption>The kitchen is a lovely warm place, with a range oven with two ovens, grill and four hotplates. So there’s plenty of scope for you to cook to your heart’s content. There is a large Aga fridge freezer with ice and water dispenser, Belfast sink, dishwasher and washing machine. And if all else fails a microwave, kettle and 4 slice toaster. There are lots of top quality pots and pans, plenty of crockery, knives, cups, cafetieres, a teapot, a nutribullet, blender and a juicer. And dog bowls! We also have an Amazon Echo hooked up to a Sonos Play 5 speaker for music, news and radio.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - dining room</image:title>
<image:caption>The dining room is a recent extension and has a large table and bench seats seating six comfortably and eight if you have guests to stay. There is also a small breakfast table with a couple of chairs with views over the valley and quite often you will spot rabbits, pheasants, farmers and sheep all wandering past. And occasionally an owl will pop up, a Tawny owl usually. There is also a multi fuel burner if you really want to create an amazing atmosphere when it’s cold outside or you just like burning things.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - breakfast table</image:title>
<image:caption>Ok, wee bit of a cheat here as this is also in the dining room but we have a small table with a couple of seats offering smashing views over the dales for those who are early to rise. By the way, there is loads of mint in the front garden and also on the driveway (which is the nicest) to the right hand side as you approach the house so help yourself. This is the best room to spot wildlife from, I got really over excited as an owl landed only six feet from the window onto the railings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - main bedroom</image:title>
<image:caption>We have three bedrooms including two double bedrooms, one single and of course a bathroom with bath and in built shower. The main bedroom, as shown, has a king size bed, two bedside cabinets, a large 5 drawer chest of drawers and a blanket box containing blankets of course! Feel free to sit on the window ledge and gaze over the valley and trees. Best done with a large drink in hand, or a book, a book’s good as well.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1621367461652-E3DBXVNTTGMI7TXEI7ME/Swale+View+Double+Bedroom.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - double room</image:title>
<image:caption>In the second bedroom there is a double bed and a very large, we got carried away, wardrobe for hanging things if you need to do so. There is also a sink and small storage area beneath it. This room has the best views when lying in the bed! There is one bedside cabinet and lamp but just open the blinds, jump back in bed and watch the amazing scenery in front of you. There is also a big window seat that you can sit on, grab a cushion or blanket and make yourself comfortable.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1621367565045-AT2VJSRZ407U4FJTQC02/Swale+View+Wee+Bedroom.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - the wee room</image:title>
<image:caption>The single room is an odd shape, bless it, but we have fitted in single bed and there is room to move in and out. There is a clothes hanger and shelf, a small bedside cabinet, which isn’t really bedside - comfy bed though! And like the other bedrooms it has has a window seat which if you can crawl over the bed and get to which offers nice views across to the valley to the River Swale. Plus side it’s where the router is so you get the best signal in the house!</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1560793747240-ZNXSH7G052ZXR7FUHOI8/porch.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - porch/drying room</image:title>
<image:caption>The porch has several uses. Somewhere to hang up your coats, kick off your muddy shoes, try and get the dog to shake itself dry. But it also has a clothes rack and radiator for drying out your clothes. Soooooo useful. The front door is also a ‘stable door’ so can be opened to let in the warm air if the weather is playing ball to aid with drying. This is also an ideal place to store bikes and other equipment if you need to.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1621367663387-4E8FFBYYJFFCLPVHCI8B/Swale+View+Bathroom.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - bathroom</image:title>
<image:caption>Not the most exciting room in the house but it has a bath and a shower head built into the bath area. We have now added a bath shower mixer to make life easier. Water pressure is 9/10 so that’s ok. A cabinet with large unforgiving mirror on it awaits your toiletries and there is a regular radiator and also an electric radiator which comes on in the morning to make the bathroom super cosy and warm. If you have a bath and a glass of wine don’t drop off, although why you are doing that at 9 in the morning is your call.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1621367781738-AHWMM44T5B1B82KEDL8P/Swale+View+Garden.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - garden</image:title>
<image:caption>The enclosed garden at the front of the house is only wee but there is enough space for you to sit out and enjoy the view and sun. They sometimes happen at the same time! We have provided a table and bench, dog is optional and we also have a chimenea you can use if you need a bit of additional heat. The doors from the kitchen open directly onto the garden making it easy to stock up on food and drink without having to go too far. You can easily do a BBQ on the wall at the end of the garden. Works perfectly! Watch out for passing sheep, rabbits, pheasants and all manner of birds. (ps binoculars are in the dining room)</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5cffb3242401b900014076b4/1621367989845-ZI9T06YIIW1SKCR2LW3H/Swale+View+Garage.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Accommodation - garage/storage area</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have bikes or other equipment you want to lock up then the garage is perfect for you. The code will be given to you and once in there marvel at the culvert running under the floor. Genuinely; a river runs through it. So be careful with anyone under the age of 16 who is in there, keep an eye on them even though it is heavily boarded over and hard to get access to. Also, ignore the rubbish I have in there, I keep meaning to get rid of it it but … whatever. So plenty of room for bikes, scooters, motorbikes, errant children, fishing gear, canoes, annoying siblings. Lock ‘em all up. Also it’s really useful as a work area for those with bikes that need some attention, There’s a small vice and workbench if you clear the paint pots.</image:caption>

<image:title>Accommodation - other information</image:title>
<image:caption>We now have fibre broadband, password is in the information folder, you can stream BBC iPlayer etc via the TV. Speeds are pretty good with a ‘guaranteed’ download speed of 50 Mbps and the upload speed will be about 15 Mbps. Recycling - take your recyclable goods to Reeth Dales Centre on the left as you drop into Reeth on Place Hill (road) or put them in the boxes in the garage and we will sort through them for you. Rubbish - place in large grey bin by garage if things get out of hand in the kitchen bin. Spare bin bags under the sink. We also provide torches for those dark walks to and back from the pub or if you need to take your dogs out at night.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Where to walk your dogs in Swaledale</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course you don’t need dogs to do these walks! These are all relatively easy walks of varying lengths. Personally I take Skye (now Luna) the dog down to the river at Isles Bridge (5 minutes walk) each morning so she can have a swim. Watch out if its been raining as a lot of the land will disappear under rapidly rising water levels! A lot of these local walks cross over each other so combine them to make new routes. Most of all, enjoy them. They are all pretty easy walking with the odd steepish hill but that’s about it. Thanks to Ordnance Survey Maps for helping us out so you can click on the links for each walk and see them in more detail. The Pathfinder books has a series o circular walks in the Yorkshire Dales. More suggested walks are featured in our Swaledale Bridges page. Skye pictured above Semer Water, itself really nice circular walk and good for a wild swim!</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Blades and Back</image:title>
<image:caption>Start and finish at the green dots, Swale View. Walk onto the main road, turn right and then sharp left up the track. Follow round and up. You go through a gate by a house and up and across a field rejoining the road. Takes about 30 mins, unless you stop off at the Punch Bowl en route. It is over half way so you have earned a drink. Bit of a steep climb up to the top, but great views from Blades across the valley. Watch out at the start for the wee ford/waterfall you can cross by foot or use the foot bridge to the right if it has been raining. Ordnance Survey Map link here. <image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Isles bridge to Gunnerside</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a nice easy walk done either way. Walk onto the main road, left towards Gunnerside, left down towards Crackpot. At Isles bridge go through the stile on the right hand side. Walk across the ‘beach‘ (if it’s been raining use stepping stones or go home if fields flooded!) follow the river on the left and use the way markers. You will be diverted onto the road for about 150 m, back left through a stile into a field that descends to the river. At Gunnerside bridge cross the stepping stones, back over the bridge up the hill and left onto the Swale Trail. Back then to Isles bridge following the river on your left. Takes about 1.5 hours. Or turn left at Gunnerside Bridge to go into the village. Only 5 minutes walk. Ordnance Survey Map link here. <image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Surrender Bridge Circular</image:title>
<image:caption>A straight forward walk, about 1.5 to 2 hours. You can walk from Swale View, adds about 40 mins, but for the shorter route take the steep road just past the Punch Bowl up towards Arkengarthdale. Park up on the road to the right signposted Reeth 3 miles, there is space for about 10 cars on the verge. Walk down to the bridge, cross it and basically follow the elevated track up on the right along the stream (which is now on your left) past the old lead mines bearing right (there are a couple of forks, always bear right) and up over the top of the hills. A bit bleak and blowy on top but some nice views across the moor for a 360 degree different perspective. Head down to join the road, turn right back to the bridge. Ordnance Survey Map link here. <image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Isles Bridge Circular</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a good 1.45 hr walk, start off at Isles Bridge and take the left hand swing gate along the Swale. Walk alongside the Swale atop a wall part of the way, and into Feetham Wood. The route doubles back sharply and upwards to the road. Bear right to the sign for Askrigg, cross over the bridge, turn right and walk a wee while, it’s signposted for the Swale Trail. Bear right at a junction still on the Swale Trail and back to Isles Bride. Look to the left on the way out for the red door of the Swale View Barn and Swale View behind, and to the right on the way back. Cyclist aplenty (ish) on weekends on the trail so be aware. <image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Swale View to Surrender Bridge via Blades</image:title>
<image:caption>As before trot off to Blades by going up the track just behind the house. In Blades take the first left turn towards the houses on the right (but not the road to them) and then fork right. Go past the standalone cottages on your right and bear right behind them, keep bearing right past a barn on your right and the track forks right. Follow for about 1.5km and it rejoins the road to Surrender Bridge. About 35 mins from Low Row to Surrender Bridge. Ordnance Survey Map link here. Grid Ref: SD 99265 98847</image:caption>

<image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Punch Bowl to CB Inn via the ‘James Herriot’ ford</image:title>
<image:caption>For those who, like me, are fans of All Creatures Great and Small, where I was first exposed to the Yorkshire Dales, you may be interested in visiting the ford which appears on the opening credits as James and Siegfried drive through it. Only about 25 minutes walk along the road from the Punch Bowl, bit of a steep start, walk over Surrender Bridge, up a wee hill on the road and then drop down again into the ford. Its a popular (all relative) picnic spot, plenty of space to park and have a nice lunch by the stream. Or carry on walking to the sister pub of The Punch Bowl the Charles Bathurst for lunch or dinner. About another 20 minutes from the Ford. Ordnance Survey Map link here. <image:title>Dog Walks in Swaledale - Fremington To Marrick</image:title>
<image:caption>Via Marrick Priory. Nice easy walk, can get blustery on top though. Park in Fremington on the left once out of Reeth in the triangle area by the junction of the road to High Fremington. Head off up to High Fremington and drop down to the Hard Stiles Road. Take that, go past the farm on your right and walk to Marrick Priory on also on your right. Once you have gone past that go over, or round, a cattle grid and head up the track to the left into the forest and up the Nuns Steps in the forest. Once you pop out the other side keep walking uphill, through some gates back onto a road into Marrick. Bear left and go past a farm on you left which ultimately takes you onto the road back to Fremington. However, about 250 metres after the farm look for a style on your left, this goes into some fields, jump in there, keep going straight ahead veering into a field on your right and bingo you will hit the road again. On the map to the left you come out to the right of the Reels Head Farm. It’s easier than it sounds. Walk is about one hour twenty minutes. Ordnance Survey Map link here. The falls are off a track to the left as you ascend the hill in Haverdale Beck. If it’s been raining they are amazing and so powerful. Keep walking up the hill on the road again and follow the signpost to Gunnerside and Muker. You get some nice views over to the right. <image:title>What to do in Swaledale - Walks</image:title>
<image:caption>Walking - while there are lots of formalised routes to follow including parts of the Coast to Coast and Pennine Way (and do check out the books in house) we prefer to head off and see what we can find as there is a lot of open land you can walk across. Please keep your dogs on leads if you can’t see what is ahead and do prepare for any weather, don’t be caught out like we have been! Check out some local walks that we have mapped out on this site as well as there are lots of options starting from Low Row as well as those walks in and around Reeth, Gunnerside, Muker, Keld, Ivelet, Fremington, Grinton and Arkengarthdale. Walks vary in length and difficulty but you will get some great views and an insight into the local history and geology of the area.</image:caption>

<image:title>What to do in Swaledale - Swale Trail</image:title>
<image:caption>Swale Trail - only a few minutes walk from Swale View you can walk or cycle this route. Running from Reeth to Keld it’s a fairly easy ride, mountain bike is recommended, of about 12 miles or 20km. There are some tougher climbs around Gunnerside and towards Keld while most of the road surfaces are track or quiet roads. Image courtesy of cyclethedales.org.uk</image:caption>

If you need to hire bikes, about 4 miles from Swale View is the Dales Bike Centre, which has all you will need from sales and service, a lovely cafe to top up on fuel, guided rides, tuition and route maps. <image:title>What to do in Swaledale - Fishing on the River Swale</image:title>
<image:caption>There is some good trout fishing to be had on a ten mile stretch on the River Swale. Day passes are available for £10 - check here where to get your day ticket. (You will need a rod licence) We often see the fish rising to catch the flies and later in the evening bats swoop down as well so there must be plenty of food for the fish to feed on.</image:caption>

<image:title>What to do in Swaledale - Wensleydale Creamery</image:title>
<image:caption>If you like cheese half as much as I do then I highly recommend you go for a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery. Based on the outskirts of Hawes over the Buttertubs Pass (cycle it, I dare you!) it includes a museum, shop and cafe. I would allow about 30 to 45 minutes for the museum tour which is genuinely interesting. I found out why they use three legged stools for milking (balance on the uneven cobble floors) and I am sure you will be equally enlightened. Suitable for all ages. The cheese shops is nuts, well, cheesy, much like this prose, but worth a visit. I am somewhat of a purest and ca'n’t be doing with nuts and such in my cheese but they have such a variety you will be very well catered for. And don’t forget the Yorkshire Dales Cheese festival is on between 11 to 14 October 2024</image:caption>

<image:title>What to do in Swaledale - Wild Swimming</image:title>
<image:caption>If a dip in the Swale (there is a spot just by Isles bridge at Crackpot, go down the steps on the right hand side of the bridge and walk to the sandy ‘beach’) doesn’t quite do it for you there are a number of other really good spots for you to go in the dales for a quick, cooling, dip! Notable among these are at Grassington, Appletreewick, Bolton Abbey, Kisdon and Wainwath Falls which sounds really exciting, and quite a few others as well such as Ellerton Lake. And the image you see here is of Semer Water which is also good for some wild swimming! As always be careful as when it has been raining the rivers will swell up and become very fast moving.</image:caption>

Worth checking out the gardens and falconry demonstrations as as well. Admission starts at £4.50 for the gardens, £9 for the castle and gardens and there are concessions and well priced family tickets available.
