5 Quirky shops to visit in the Yorkshire Dales

One of the things we like to do is to browse around new shops, ones that offer both interesting and local items that perhaps aren’t always available where you are usually based. And often there is the advantage that shopping more locally also means you can save some money as well - we certainly have!

So here are a few shops, not all super local but build them into a half day outing or if you need some other shopping done combine them. I often go to Booths in Settle (basically it’s a very good Waitrose) while I am peeking around a few of the shops we mention below. So in no particular order here we go:

  • Lord Antiques & Salvage is a lovely warren of a place, hosting lots of independent traders offering all sorts of antiques, art, furniture, lighting, military, watches, records, posters & collectibles as well as upcycled furniture. I could go on, prepare to spend hours there and check out the side rooms including one dedicated to taxidermy! Based in Ingleton about 50 minutes from Swale View, get there via Ribblehead Viaduct. Its a cracking drive.

  • Close by in the small town of Settle is the unusually named Car and Kitchen right in the marketplace. (park in the Booths car park, 5 min walk) I came very close to buying a really nice side table here. As well as lovely furnishings, kitchenware, clothes & local Yorkshire gifts for the home there is a very good cafe as well. Does a good veggie breakfast I am told. About 1 hour from Swale View.

  • Closer to home in Richmond is the wonderful York House Antiques which left me ever so slightly bemused as I went from one room to another via a series of staircases and steps - its all good fun so be prepared to explore. They offer a seemingly endless mixture of unique furniture, art, tools, old Yorkshire memorabilia, soft furnishings, gifts, upcycled lighting, plant pots, buddhas, cards and really so much more! Only 20 minutes from Swale View in the lower part of the central Marketplace on Frenchgate.

  • Also close by is the excellent shop that is Campbells in Leyburn. As well as having the usual supermarket supplies it has a superb butchery counter and a fabulous selection of cheeses. So what do you need to go with that? Wine of course! So upstairs is the most unexpectedly large (1,500+) selection of wine in the area, it really is very good. Check out the tastings they run there as well.

  • Nip over Buttertubs Pass and drop into Hawes for a visit to The Old Sweet Shop which has been selling sweets for over 50 years. All of the usual suspects (although no Neapolitans when I was last there, 70’s luxury item where I was brought up ) but an excellent selection (550 types!) of all your favourite sweets. All available in whatever amount you would like.

So there you are, a few interesting shops to visit all within an hours drive of Swale View. Hope you have fun and the best thing is the drives to all of them are special, so take your time, enjoy the scenery and then go shopping!
